Layoffs Hit Oracle as It Shifts Focus to Artificial Intelligence
Last week, software powerhouse Oracle kicked off a massive layoff effort, aiming to trim costs and ramp up its artificial intelligence capabilities. The move has left many employees reeling, with some taking to LinkedIn to share their job loss updates and start their job hunting journeys. This latest round of layoffs is the latest example of a tech company prioritizing AI, and Oracle is not alone in this pursuit.
The firings got underway at around 6 am local time on Tuesday, March 31, sending shockwaves through Oracle's global workforce. It's estimated that around 12,000 employees in India have been let go, although the total number of layoffs is expected to be much higher. Oracle's termination emails, which were obtained by Business Insider, cited broader organisational changes as the reason for the layoffs, a thinly veiled reference to the company's push to build more AI data centers.
According to the email, employees were told that their roles had been eliminated as part of a broader organisational change. As a result, their last working day was Tuesday, March 31. Oracle also offered some consolation, stating that employees would be eligible for a severance package once they've signed the necessary paperwork.
