Labour Party's Peter Obi Fires Back at Tinubu Over Nigeria's Electricity Crisis
Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has taken President Bola Tinubu to task over Nigeria's worsening electricity situation. Obi recently shared a statement on X, calling out Tinubu for failing to keep his campaign promise regarding power supply. He recalled Tinubu's 2023 campaign pledge, which stated that Nigerians shouldn't vote for him for a second term if he didn't deliver constant electricity within four years.
Fast-forward to the present, and it's clear that Tinubu has fallen short of his promise. When he took office, Nigeria had a power supply of over 4,000 megawatts and lower tariffs. However, today, power generation has dropped below that initial level, and Nigerians are paying more for electricity. Obi pointed out that when Tinubu assumed office, Nigeria had a power supply of over 4,000 megawatts, but now it's averaging less than 4,000 megawatts, with higher tariffs to boot.
Obi also highlighted Nigeria's low electricity consumption, which is a staggering 144 kWh, significantly lower than the African average of 617kwh. This means that Nigerians consume the least amount of electricity compared to other Africans. The issue is further compounded by Tinubu's recent visit to Jos, where he admitted that the airport lacked electricity, a glaring display of the scale of the problem.
