Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike Lays the Record Straight on Opposition Suppression Claims
In a recent interview in Abuja, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike addressed allegations that the current administration is targeting opposition parties, calling such claims unfounded. Speaking to a room full of journalists, Wike reflected on his own experiences with political pressure during the presidency of former President Muhammadu Buhari, asserting that the challenges opposition groups face today are nothing compared to what he endured back then.
Wike's comments come at a time when the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu are under fire for allegedly trying to weaken opposition parties and create a one-party system. However, Wike was quick to reject these accusations, pointing out that he had faced far more severe political pressure in the past without backing down. "It's not correct that the current ruling party is killing the opposition," he said, "and I take exceptions to that." Wike then went on to share his personal experience of being "personally haunted" during Buhari's presidency, referencing his involvement in internal disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the legal battles that reached the Supreme Court.
