Yemen's Youth Bear the Brunt of Conflict: 1,200 Children Affected
A devastating report from Save the Children has revealed the tragic toll of Yemen's ongoing conflict on its youth. Despite a United Nations-led ceasefire four years ago, nearly 1,200 children have been killed or injured. Since the truce brokered on April 2, 2022, at least 339 children have lost their lives, while 843 have suffered injuries, some of which will have a lasting impact on their lives.
According to the UK-based humanitarian organisation, a staggering 511 child casualties, roughly one in two, can be attributed to landmines and explosive remnants of war. The Civilian Impact Monitoring Project (CIMP) data, collected under the UN Protection Cluster, suggests that children are more than three times more likely than adults to fall victim to explosive remnants.
While overall civilian casualties have decreased since the ceasefire, the percentage of children harmed by landmines or unexploded ordnance has increased significantly in the past four years. Save the Children attributes this alarming trend to a lack of mine risk awareness and the increasing exposure of children to these dangers through child labour.
