US Missionary Alex Barbir's Sudden Departure from Nigeria Has Sparked a Social Media Backlash
A heated exchange has erupted on social media between US Missionary Alex Barbir and former Presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, following Alex's announcement that he has left Nigeria. It all began on Monday, March 30, when Bashir launched a campaign calling for security agents to investigate and arrest Alex, accusing him of spreading hate and division among Nigerians.
Islamic Cleric Sheik Gumi also joined the fray, echoing Bashir's sentiments and calling for an investigation into Alex's activities. However, in a surprising twist, Alex revealed on social media that he has indeed left Nigeria, firing back at his critics with a bold statement addressed directly at Bashir and Sheik Gumi. He challenged them to ensure a peaceful Nigeria, free from violence and terrorism, and to instruct their "brothers" – a clear reference to extremist groups ISWAP, Fulani, and Boko Haram – to take a break from their militant activities.
Bashir has since responded to Alex's post, refuting his claims of a voluntary departure. According to Bashir, Alex was in fact ordered to leave Nigeria by the authorities, a stark contrast to Alex's earlier assertions.
